This is the third major hymn book produced by the United Church since its formation in 1925. Each book has been a product of its time. The Hymnary (1930) attempted a reconciliation of the music and worship traditions of the foundng Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregationalist Churches. The Hymn Book (1971) was produced and published in expectation of our union with the Anglican Church and reflected the need to accommodate the hymn and worship traditions of both communions. Voices United is the first "United Church" book, addressing the specific needs of our own church and time.
Voices United is more tha a hymn book. It reflects increased interest in and concern with liturgical renewal in two ways: a greatly expanded psalter section, and teh inclusion of service material in the form of prayers, creeds, and service music. |
