Although many consider Central America a thoroughly Catholic region, Protestant organizations based in the United States began in teh 1970s to send missionaries to Latin America in a concerted effort to convert Catholics to Protestantism. In this penetrating analysis of the social and political implications of Protestantism, focusing particularly on teh fast-growing Pentecostal groups, Anne Motley Hallum provides a thorough overview of htis complez phenomenon. Basing her argument largely upon firsthand field experience, the author asserts that the most important distinction is between churches that are of the poor and those taht are still instituted from outside the culture or run by an intellectual or economic elite. These churches of the poor, rather than effecting immediate political changes, are likely to foster deep societal transformations in Central America. Hallum's careful an coherent analysis will be of interest to students and scholars of religion, political science, and Latin America.
