Relevant preaching has to do with the concreteness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a particular time and situation. In South Africa it must therefore remain tied to its socio - political reality.
That is the theme - or rather one of the themes - of this anthology by Allan Boesak, one of South Africa's most prominent theologians. Some of his readers may see his sermons as controversial; no-one will doubt his deep sincerity and his devotion to the Living Word. In the midst of much confusion, Dr. Boesak cuts through to the heart of the Word and its implications for his country. Most of the sermons were delivered to student congregations - he is presently NGK chaplain at the University of Western Cape. They deal with such matters as the ministry in a black situation, the death of Steve Biko, the information scandal... In Boesak's first book, A Farewell to Innocence, we saw his importance as a theologian. Here again hi is admonishing, prophetic, sometimes struggling with the demands of his own conscience, but consistently clear-thinking and frequentrly inspiring. |
