A study for young people in the presbyterian church (U.S.A)
The numbers are staggering. In the nine years since this course was introduced, nearly eith million teenage Americans became pregnant. More than twenty million teens acquired some type of sexualy transmitted infection. An more than 500,000 cases of AIDS were diagnosed; many of those diagnosed most likely acquired the disease as teens. We live in a culture that constantly bombards its young people with confusing messages about sex and sexuality. Sex is everywhere: in the advertisements aimed at our children, in the televisions shows and movies they watch, in the music they listen to. But the media and popular culture can't be blamed for everything. We as parente and educators have to take some responsibility for too often standing on the sidelines as the numbers grow: by age 15, one in four girls and one in three boys are sexually active; bye age 20, four out of five young Americans have had sexual intercourse; HIV/AIDS is increasing in the heterosexual popuation, especially among young women; and the number of teen pregnancies shows no sign of slowing down. But there is hope. AIDS awarness and education has improved dramatically in the 1990s; sex education is now the rule rather than the exception in our public schools; ratings systems are helping parents decide what is appropriate for their children to watch on television; and after a public outcry, a prominent fashion company was forced to cancel advertisements featuring youth in sexually suggestive situations. The presbyterian church (U.S.A) has not stood bye silentrly either. This course for youth and older youth was created in response to a mandate from its General Assembly, as was God's Plan for Growing Up, a sexuality education curriculum for elementary-age children and their parents. And in 1998, the sexuality curriculum for young children and their parents, In God's Image, was produced, also in response to a General Assembly mandate. There are the numbers, but there is also hope. This course is part of that hope. |
