When Kate Banner, an American midwife in Nicaragua, loses another patient - a young woman who had given birth only the nigth before on the bottom of a swamped wooden boat - she knows it is time to go home. Because to care for the children of war, you have to cut off pieces of your heart.
But traveling home leads her to Guatemala, where even children sometime disappear. Patricia Henley's Hummingbird House is a beautifullly told story of a woman's struggles to face new territories of love and war in the middle of her life. This is a moving and emotionally trust-worthy tale of a human heart unbinding itself in the most unjust of worlds. Now I have cared for many children. To do that you have to cut off pieces of your heart. You have to stop thinking about them and just keep on bandaging or keep on cleaning sores that fill again with pus the minute you are through or keep on watching, sometimes watching and waiting is all you are capable of... But Marta was still whole. That was a miracle to me. She caught me off guard and I felt such tenderness for her as I knelt there in our pink tiled bathroom, trimming each petite toenail and rubbing lotion into her tough geet and I can recall the smell of that lotion, just telling you reminsd me, it is a smell that brings to mind Maggie, a verbena lotion, a little like lemon, and Marta loved that. I forgot myself while servin her. For a few moments. That can happen once in a rare while, the self disappears and that is a relief and perhaps some people serve for that very reason, to get beyond their puny selves... ... I fel she sensed this because she stayed right by my side and she never spole but she stayed right by my side. That night she crept into my room and I raise the sheet and blanket and let her into bed with me. We slept together curled together and I could imagine that I felt the way a new mother might feel , for just that night. |
