The Word of God is the ongly infallible rule of faith and life. No other document - not even one publishe under the best auspices of the church - can be regarded in the same light.
This cornerstone of Protestant faith is the foundation on which George S. Hendry builds a present-day interpretation of the Westminster Confession of Faith. Although the Confession is formally accepted by Presbyterian Churches, many individuals have called for revision, others for an entirely new Confession. The crux of the difficulty is that the Confession comees from the 17th centrury, an age of legalism, individualism, and clearly defined boundaries between good and evil. Today, new insights from the Bible and new social, economic, and political conditions require us to reinterpret ancient truths. Invited by John Knox Press to write this commentary, Dr. Hendry believes that the Confession can still render valuable service in the journey of faith. He is professor of systematic theology at Princeton Theological Seminary. |
