A memorable phrase from the third assembly of the World Council of Churches (New Delhi 1961) described Christian people as "a letter from Christ to the world". And 98 percent of those Christians are laypeople, "daily missionaries" whose witness comes through their lives and tasks and relationships in God's world.
Active and devoted lay Christians contributed much to shaping the ecumenical movement in its formative years. While not ordained to special ministries within the church, they saw living out their faith and working for Christian unity in everyday contexts as their own ministry. After a perido when the quesiton of the role of laypeople had a relatively low profile in the WCC's work, recent years have seen renewed attention to this. The essays here trace this ecumenical rediscovery of the laity, exploring its theological implications along two lines: (1) the relationship between the "people of God" (those who belong to the church) and the "whole people of God" (all human beings, created in God's image) and (2) the link between the laos, the people of God, and the clergy, those "set apart" for a particular ministry within the church. |
