This book is about history - about a history that began some five hundred years ago. It is albo a book about all of us in the modern world - about our civilization, our culture, and even our faith. This is so, because true history does not lie dead in the past but is still alive and present with us, shaping the way we live and relate to aone another, even when we do not know it.
This book will make clear why so many people feel it is inappropiriate to celebrate the "discovery" of the so-called "New World". Therefore, I sahll not attempt to list here the reasons why such celebration is inappropriate - if each person whose life was destroyed as a result of the events of 1492 is a reason not to celebrate, that in itself provides several million reasons.
What I do wish to make clear, however, is that this is a subject whose pertinence will not pass as 1992 draws to a clse. The "quincentinnial" will indeed severe as a catalyst for much discussion, but if that discussion fades into the backgroud in 1993, it will have been an interesting debate and little more. As Rivera shows, what is called for is a process of "critial reflectoin, joining academic honesty with moral integrity." That process will take much more than a year or two - even more so, since as we become more deeply engaged in it we shall find ourselves questioning a number of presuppositions upon wich our very society and our wy of life stand.
For these reasons, although this is a very timely book, being published precisely at the time of the "quincentennial" of 1492, it is also a book that should be studied and debated for many years to come, as we seek to build a more just society for the next five hundred years.
