GUATEMALA FOR YOU I hope will prove just that!For you the traveler and visitor, for you who have lived here for quite some time, for you the resident, and for you - especially- my friends of twenty years, the Guatemalans.
This book esa written over several years, having to be revised after the 1976 earthquake. When started, there was no up-to-date guide to the country published; now completed, there are several an excellent. I hope you will enjoy this one just as much as my family and I have enjoyed visiting the places mentioned. Where possible, the order of towns presented more or less follows their placement on the highways. All towns are mentioned alphabetically in teh index. Distances and altitudes are given generally in teh metric system. I have taken the liberty of including two foreign Mayan cities in this text: one of which (Copán) forms part of every Guatemalan tourist agency's programme; and the other (Yaxchilán), the logical terminus for a boat ride up the Usumacinta river. It might be well to mentio too that Guatemala's main attractions lie in her countryside, and in her archaeological and colonial ruins, rather than in the capital itself, the main points of interest being: Mayan Tikal, colonial Antigua Guatemala, Indian Chichicastenango, and lake Atitlán. Copán in the Republic of Honduras should also be considered part of this short list. |
