A Thousand Tieme Heroic is the tribute paid to the people of El Salvador by MIrna Anaya as she buried her murdered husband, but it applies to all the people of Central America. During the 1980s 150,000 of them have been killed by armies, police forces and death squads in the service of minorities clinging to their power and wealth or in counter-revolutionary war. And behind the killing stands the most powerful nation on earth.
And yet, amid the suffering and teh destruction, people dare to hope. This book seeks to express both the heroism and the hope as witnessed by a CIIR delegation which visited the region in October 1987, two months after the signature of the Peace Plan. It is also a plea for change, primarily to the United States, which has the choice between peace and war in Central America: in the words of Archbishop Romero, echoed by Mirna Anaya, stop the killing. |
