This book is generated from a simple but powerful idea: that the number of opposite-sex partners potentially available to men or women has profound effects on sexual behaviors and sexual mores, on patterns of marriage and divorce, childrearing conditions and practice, family stability, and certain structural aspectos of society itself. Although the importance of male-female ratios among animals and humans was recognized by Charles Darwin, no one has fully developed the idea by making a comprehensive survey of the evidence for it and pointing out its profound implications. This book attempts to do just that.
