This book began with a request from a group of laity and nonacademic friends to facilitate a discussion of what prayes is. I agreed to do so not because this was something I already knew, but because it was my question as well. It is still my question. These meditations respond to a vacuum, they don't fill it. An the lively response to the book's initial publication ten years ago indicates that this is a question for many others as well. I am please to think its republication may stimulate a still wider inquiry into the nature of prayer.
