A new Reformation has begun in Latin America, primarily among Roman Catholics. Most of us are aware that it is happening and tha poor people are at the center of it. We have heard of priests and nuns who have gone to live with the poor and support their struggle, and we know that quite a number of the m have been persecuted or martyred. We have read in the press of the new church of the poor and of the basic ecclesial communities, around which this new church is taking shape. We are most aware of the theology of liberation, denoundes by some as Marxist while being heralded by others as the most creative theological movement of our time.
In these pages I am concerned to present what the theologians of liberation are saying and to interpret their thought correctly. But cannot claim to do so with detached objectivity. I speak here as someone who has faced the same human situation they face, who shares their concerns, and who has worked in close collaboration with some of them over the years. |
