The point of this book, then, is to encourage Bible study. It is not an end in itself but a means to anothes end: directly confronting the biblical text. It is not trying to be "balanced" but to be provocative, and readers are encouraged to challenge its particular interpretations; after all, the biblical texts are there, and it is the biblical texts that are important.
Each chapter begins with a statement of some aspect of out situation that needs fresh attention in the light of biblical faith. This is followed bya biblical passage and some comments on ways of understanding tha passage today. A third section provides other biblical materials elaborating the same theme. A final section raises questions and poses items for group discussion, since insights of others can often correct strange interpretations of our own. The "mix" and proportions within that overall framework vary form chapter to chapter. After all, a book about "unespected news" should contain some surprises of its own. |
