This book attempts to describe ans explain how this process has occured and to reflect on teh issues it raises. Roughly half the book is a fairly detailed chronological account of how Christians became involved in revolutions in Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala and might be considered as a series of case studies in political science. However, the exercise as a whole might best be considered a species of interdisciplinary practical theology.
This book is being written with several audiences in mid. First Christians who are concerned about what has been happening in Central America. Many have worked ardently to oppose what they see as mistaken United States intervention there. In addition, it is not too early for those in leadership and opinion-making roles in the church (hierarchy, theologians, media) to begin to see the issues raised in Central America in their complexity, magnitude, and possible further consequences. |
