Blending an authentically biblical perspective with insights from personal experience, contemporary life, and Christian theology, Segundo Galilea defines the nature, sources, and goals of a spirituality that responds to the challenges Christians face today. He synthesizes these diverse experiences into an articulate and impassiones call for a new spirituality based on a renewed commitment to the teachings of the gospels.
Christianity is indeed in the midst of a deep spiritual crisis, but Galilea notes that this in not extraordinary: Where there is transition and renewal ther is always crisis in the sense of a process that creates a synthesis of more adequate values than in the previous synthesis. Crisis is thus inherent to the Church; twenty centuries of history confirm this." Galilea argues for the creation and sustenance of faith in keeping with the great spiritual traditions of Christianity, a faith that also is consistent with contemporary human and Christian experience. No single model from the Church's past will suffice as a paradigm; rather, the Church must be a living body, adapting to the needs of a particular age and place even as it remains true to its theological roots. As members of this body. Christians must not fear change but rather embrace it as a necessary aspect of the unceasing continuity of God´s Church. In postulating his synthesis, Galilea's experiences as a Chilean priest come fully to bear. Schooled in teh timeless message of the gospels, experienced in urgent social and political concerns, Galilea is in a unique position to describe the history and set the directives of this new spirituality. |
