A broad, deep desire for real freedom inflames people throughout the world today. Latin American liveration theology has been the mayor response to this movement. Its originality and connection with Marxism has brought it to the surprised, fascinated, and bewildered attention of Christians all over the world. Liberation and Change deals with this Latin American development and the response of other Christians to it.
Liberation and Change illuminates the relationship of politics, freedom, and salvation while at the same time highlighting the difference between America's revolution and modern third world turmoil. These well known spokesmen, Sout American Gustavo Gutiérrez and North American Richard Shaull, stress different areas in interpreting today's social problems: Gutiérrez emphasizes the suffering of the poor; Shaull dwells on the meaninglessness of som middle-class ideals. Gutiérrez arguments, rich in scholarship. defend liberation theology. Shaull's clear, bold thesis calls clasical theology to radical transformation. The two contrasting presentations complemente each other like the sides of a coin. Both see a need for Christians to combat oppressive socio-economic situations. Both view politics as a crucial concern for today's Christians. |
