Simone Weil's own poem "La Porte" provides the right image and keynote, that of the gate or doorway. God is the absolute good, and the world is the gateway to it, so are religion, philosophy, art and science. What is imperative for the traveller at the gate is that he should maintain his sense of the absoluteness of what lies beyond, and also the integrity and honesty with which his account of it is applied to life in the world. In these writings we see someone with magnificence and with pathos followint that imperative.
