This book is offered as a resource for daily prayer in a variety of circumstances, and it will need to be adapted by those who use it to fulfill the requirements of the occasion.
The services are ordered along traditional lines. This pattern of daily prayer has developed over many centuries and has been useful to people of faith. Nevertheless, there is considerable flexibility in these services, and they may be shaped according to particular needs. It is important to remember that this book is not to be used as a substitute for our most personal prayers, but to prompt ans encourage us in our daily worship of Almighty God. The prayers offerd here are intended to help us pray our own prayers, perhaps serving as models for our prayers, or even suggesting language to give voice to our deepest prayers. Music is important in daily prayer. Song can transform what otherwise might be a rather pedestrian service into a liturgy that effectively leads worship into prayer. At least the psalms and biblical songs, as well as the hymns, should be sung. |
